An anesthesiologist is the perioperative physician and is involved in all aspects of medical care during a surgical experience. In the operating room, the anesthesiologist matches the anesthetic needs of the patient to their medical condition, individual response to anesthesia, and the anesthetic requirements of the surgery. In the ICU, the anesthesiologist is responsible for providing medical assessments and diagnosis, respiratory and cardiovascular support, and infection control. The anesthesiologist is also responsible for continually monitoring and assessing the patient after surgery and determining when the patient has completely recovered from anesthesia.
