Dental Hygienist Job Description

Dental hygienists are responsible for a variety of important procedures that may be performed in a dental office. Dental Hygienists remove plaque and stains from teeth, apply fluoride and sealants as preventative measures, as well as taking and developing x-rays. Dental Hygienists also provide instruction for proper oral hygiene including nutritional information, and proper brushing and flossing techniques.

Overall, Dental Hygienist salaries are based on years of experience, geographic location, and type of employment.

According to Salary.com, the current median expected salary for a typical Dental Hygienist in the United States is $71,461.

The US Department of Labor reported that the average hourly earnings of dental hygienists were $28.05, while the highest reported hourly earnings of $40.70.

Dental hygienists may be paid hourly, by salary or commission. However, almost all dental hygienists receive dental coverage.

Dental Hygienist Job Outlook

A recent survey indicates that approximately 158,000 jobs were held by dental hygienists, with a majority working in dental offices. More than half of working dental hygienists work only part time, less than 35 hours a week, just as many hold multiple jobs.

The job outlook is very good, as it is one of the thirty fastest growing professions in the United States.

High job growth is attributed to the high demand for quality dental care that was previously performed by dentists. Dental hygienists are able to relieve dentists of their heavy workload by being able to provide preventative care to patients. In turn, dentists are able to direct their productivity to more profitable procedures.
