Dermatology Job Description

A dermatologist diagnosis and treats conditions of the skin and appendages including acne, athletes foot, hair loss, nail problems, rashes and warts. Dermasurgeons perform surgery including skin cancer surgery, laser surgery, phlebectomy (vein surgery), liposuction, chemical peels, “Botox” treatments, dermabrasion, and hair transplants. Pediatric dermatologists diagnose and treat skin conditions in children. Dermatologists also treat conditions caused by an altered immune system, and a number of other hereditary disorders. Dermatologists may work in hospitals, clinics, private practice, or offer house calls. They typically work full time, and are usually on call and work weekend hours, especially when employed at a hospital.

Dermatologists that are self-employed in a private practice set their own rate for each patient. This typically results in higher earnings and fewer work hours.

The American Board of Dermatology reports that there are 8,500 board certified dermatologists practicing in the United States. There are 15,000 dermatology professionals that are members of American Academy of Dermatology.

Job prospects for dermatologist are expected to be very good, as job growth is increasing faster than average. Patients continue to demand specialized dermatology treatments, the latest techniques and therapies.
