Emergency Medical Technician Job Description
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and paramedics provide emergency
care and transport the sick or injured to a medical facility. EMTs
respond to a variety of incidents including heart attacks, childbirth,
and incidents of violence or accidents. Due to the nature of
emergencies, EMTs work irregular schedules with shifts around the clock.
The specific duties performed by an EMT depends on level of training. An
EMT-B provides the most basic level of care, while an EMT-I or an EMT-P
can perform a variety of medical life saving procedures including use of
IV, defibrillators, EKG, and administering drugs.

EMT Job Outlook
A recent survey indicates that approximately 192,000 jobs were held
by EMTs and paramedics, with the highest numbers working in metropolitan
areas.
In rural areas, many EMTs work as unpaid volunteers, as local
governments cannot afford the high cost of emergency health care.
Volunteers work for hospitals, fire departments, emergency medical
services, or local government.
Employment opportunities for EMTs are expected to be excellent in the
years to come. Job opportunities are best in the private ambulance
sector, while competition for local government jobs is high. Between now
and 2014, the number of EMTs is expected to increase faster than average
as EMTs and paramedics replace unpaid volunteers.
The demand for EMTs and paramedic services is also likely to increase as
population and urbanization increases, in which medical emergencies are
more likely.
