Geriatrician Job Description
A geriatrician may focus primarily on geriatric medicine or on
geriatric psychology. If the primary focus is geriatric medicine,
geriatricians treat things like cardiovascular disorders, liver or
kidney disorders, osteoporosis and other bone disorders, endocrine and
skin disorders of the elderly. Geriatricians with a focus in geriatric
psychology treat conditions including depression, delirium, dementia,
neurological disorders, and other psychotic disorders of the aging
population. All geriatricians must be able to properly assess and
approach geriatric complications, as well as knowledge of appropriate
medications, drug interactions, and side effects.

Overall, Geriatrician salaries are based on years of experience,
geographic location, public demand, the type of facility and required
schedule.
According to Salary.com, the current median expected salary for a
typical Geriatrician in the United States is $152,289.
As stated at PayScale.com, Geriatricians in the states of New York
and Georgia had the lowest median annual salary at about $110,000 and
Geriatricians in South Carolina and Connecticut have the highest median
annual salary at over $150,000.
Another survey conducted by payscale.com reveals a difference in
salary by type of employment as follows:
- Nursing Home - $160,000
- Hospital - $120,000
- Federal Government - $177,000
- Surgery Center - $130,000
- Private Practice - $125,500
Geriatric Job Outlook
A great number of physicians that are certified in internal medicine
chose to further specialize in another field, making up about
thirty-three percent of all certified physicians.
Employment opportunities for physicians are expected to grow faster
than average through 2014 due to the expanding healthcare industry and
the growing elderly population, which requires more care from trained
geriatric professionals. Job growth will be faster than the average in
physician's offices and outpatient care centers.
As healthcare of elderly patients will be an increasing concern to
