Medical assistants perform clinical and administrative tasks in a physicians’ office to assist with overall control and management of the health care facility. Medical assistants may work with primary care physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, and many other healthcare practitioners. Most medical assistants work a typical forty hour work week, while some work only part-time.

According to Salary.com, the current median expected salary for a typical Medical Assistant in the United States is $29,771.

The US Department of Labor reported a difference in salary among different employer groups as follows:

  • Schools - $27,490
  • Outpatient - $25,360
  • Hospitals - $25,160
  • Physicians Offices - $24,930
  • Other Practitioner Offices - $21,930

Medical Assistant Job Outlook

A recent survey indicates that approximately 387,000 jobs were held by medical assistants, with the highest numbers working in physicians offices, with others working in a variety of healthcare facilities.

Employment opportunities for medical assistants are expected to be excellent in the years to come. Between now and 2014, the number of medical assistants is expected to increase faster than most occupations.

Employment growth is attributed to the growing number of healthcare facilities that need support personnel, especially medical assistants who are able to multi-task clinical and administrative duties.

The expansion of the healthcare industry as well as technological advances, an aging population, and the increased use of medical assistants are all help to increase the number of employment opportunities.
