The work done by a sales and marketing representative can vary greatly. Factors that determine the work done by a sales force include how many physicians are seen and how often they are visited by a sales rep. A typical representative has a call list of 200 physicians that is visited in four week cycles.

Marketing to patients, specifically pharmaceuticals, has been on the rise since the 1980. By using television commercials, companies directly influence patients who will request the drugs from their doctor. This type of marketing is referred to as direct-to-consumer advertising (DTC) and has increased more than 400 percent in seven years.

The salary for marketing and sales representatives can vary depending on years of experience and location.

According to Salary.com, the current median expected salary for a typical sales representative in pharmaceuticals in the United States is $54,242. A senior sales representative earns slightly more reporting an expected salary of $64,885.

Compensation for medical sales and marketing representatives also includes commissions and benefit packages such as company vehicles, prizes, and vacations.

Medical Sales and Marketing, especially in pharmaceuticals has been drastically increasing over the past few decades. At one time, medical marketing was solely aimed at physicians, but has recently shifted to patient marketing, which has greatly increased profits. Now medical sales forces are engaged in mass marketing to patients and physicians alike.

A recent survey indicates that there are approximately 80,000 medical sales representatives that sell to a vast percentage of the 625,000 physicians. Jobs in medical sales and marketing are in high demand due to the reputed compensation of medical and pharmaceutical companies. The number of medical sales reps continues to increase as the sales generated from marketing directly to patient consumers grow annually.
