Nurse Anesthesiologist Job Description
A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) works closely with a
number of healthcare professionals ranging from surgeons and dentists to
podiatrists and anesthesiologists. CRNAs take care of patients
anesthesiology needs before, during, and after surgery. They perform
physical assessments and participate in pre-operation preparation. CRNAs
prepare the patient for anesthesia, administer the anesthesia, maintain
anesthesia during operation, and oversee recovery from anesthesia after
surgery. CRNAs must stay with the patient throughout the entire
procedure and continuously monitor body functions. CRNAs modify
anesthesia for individual patients to ensure safety. CRNAs are
responsible for over half of the 26 million anesthetics given to
patients every year in the US.

CRNA salary is one of the most appealing incentives to seek graduate
training. According to a recent survey, CRNAs earned between $125,000
and $140,000 a year. CRNA salaries can vary greatly by the type of
facility, where those who are in private practice may earn two to three
times more than the national average.

Nurse Anesthesiologist Job Outlook
There are currently almost 30,000 CRNAs practicing hospitals,
offices, and other healthcare facilities. CRNAs are permitted to
practice in all 50 states, with state associations which help govern the
practice of nurse anesthestists. Other nations have also allowed nurses
to administer anesthesia, which also have associations to help cover the
practice.
The job outlook for CRNAs is very promising. According to a mandated
study by the NIH, 6,000 more nurse anesthetists will be needed in the
year 2010, which is a 40 percent increase of the number practicing now.
More schools are offering nurse anesthesists graduate training to keep
up with the growing demand. There are many employment opportunities for
CRNAs in a number of healthcare settings. CRNAs may continue education
to the terminal level of PhD or DNSc (Doctor of Nursing Science) in
which case they are qualified for a number of careers including
research, teaching, and administration.
CRNAs help to provide cost-efficient, high quality patient care. As
the trend to keep healthcare costs down and patient care quality high,
the demand for CRNAs is only expected to increase.
