Nurse Practitioner Job Outlook
According to a national sample survey of registered nurses there is
an estimated 102,829 nurse practitioners. Of this number, almost 15,000
NPs were prepared as clinical nurse specialists (CNS).
The job outlook for nurse practitioners is very good because of the
services they provide. NPs are able to ensure thorough, quality
healthcare that is cost effective. The NP can in some cases take the
place of a physician. As healthcare costs continue to increase, so will
the demand for cost-effective healthcare services.
The demand for nurse practitioners is not as high as the demand for
nurses in other specialties. This is not to say however that the career
path is slipping. There are twice as many practicing NPs today than
there were ten years ago.
