Oncology Job Description
Oncologists work very closely with cancer patients. They perform
diagnostic tests such as blood test, MRI, PET or Body scans, X-rays,
biopsy, and Endoscopy, to check for cancer. In order to treat cancer,
oncologists use various therapies including chemotherapy, radiation
therapy, hormone therapy, and vaccinations. Surgical therapy is often
performed to attempt to remove cancerous tumors, which are then treated
medically. Oncologists are responsible for explaining the cancer and the
various stages to patients, as well as discussing and recommending the
best source of treatment.

Overall, the salary of an oncologist is based on years of experience,
location, the type of facility and shifts.
According to Salary.com, the current median expected salary for an
Oncologist in the United States is $235,929.
The Allied Physicians Salary survey reveals a difference in salary by
years of experience for Oncologists as follows:
- 1-2 Years - $181,348
- 3 or More - $245,000
- Maximum - $685,000
Oncology Job Outlook
Only a small percentage of all physicians specialize in the field of
oncology. The US Department of Labor reports 15 percent of physicians
specialize in internal medicine.
Due to the expanding healthcare industry, the job outlook for all
physicians is very good. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics,
the number of positions for physicians is supposed to grow faster than
average between now and 2014.
Many Oncologists work for non-profit organizations for cancer
research. As funding to find cures for cancer increase, the demand for
specialists in oncology will also grow.
