Opthamologist Job Description
Ophthalmologists perform a variety of tasks related to the diagnosing
and treatment of eye diseases. An ophthalmologist may perform routine
eye exams in order to diagnose eye conditions and prescribe glasses or
surgery. Surgical procedures performed by ophthalmologists include Laser
vision surgery, cataract surgery, retinal disease surgery, and the
treatment of glaucoma. Ophthalmologists may specialize and treat in
certain fields including corneal diseases, retina and vitreous diseases,
glaucoma, pediatric eye problems, and plastic surgery.

typical Ophthalmologist in the United States is $202,133.
The Allied Physicians Salary survey reveals a difference in salary by
years of experience for Ophthalmologists as follows:
- 1-2 Years - $ 138,000
- 3 or More - $314,000
- Maximum - $511,000
However, for ophthalmologists who specialty is retinal diseases, the
salary range is considerably higher.
- 1-2 Years - $280,000
- 3 or More - $469,000
- Maximum - $716,000
Opthamology Job Outlook
Only a small percentage of all physicians specialize in the field of
ophthalmology. The US Department of Labor reports about 15 percent of
physicians specialize in surgical specialties.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of positions
for eye doctors is expected to grow faster than average between now and
2014. The job outlook for ophthalmologists is very good due to the need
for vision care in the aging population. As baby bombers age, there will
be a greater need for treatment of conditions associated with aging
including cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetes.
Laser surgery is also advancing to treat more and more eye conditions
that can almost permanently cure some eye conditions.
