Pharmacy Technician Job Description

Depending on level of training and experience, pharmacy technicians perform a wide variety of tasks associated with preparing prescribed medications, including clerical duties of maintaining records and manual duties of providing drugs to patients. Pharmacy technicians do not answer patient questions about medications, but refer them to the pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians work in a variety of settings including community and retail pharmacy, military, or hospitals.

According to Salary.com, the current median expected salary for an entry level Pharmacy Technician in the United States is $25,300. For more experienced Pharmacy Technicians, the median expected salary is $29,670.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly earning of Pharmacy technicians is $11.37/hour. However, the survey reported a difference in salary according to type of facility as follows:

  • Hospitals: $12.93
  • Merchandise Store: $11.11
  • Grocery Store: $11.77
  • Department Store: $10.56
  • Healthcare Store: $10.51
