Phlebotomist Job Description

A Phlebotomist collects blood samples for a variety of reasons, including medical testing, blood transfusion, and blood donation. Blood is collected primarily through venipuncture, though phlebotomists use other methods including finger stick, heel stick, or butterfly needles.  Phlebotomists are also responsible for explaining procedures to patients, updating patient records, sterilizing equipment, and taking vital signs. Phlebotomists are usually certified in CPR.

Overall, Phlebotomist salaries are based on location, level of experience, and the type of facility.

According to Salary.com, the current median expected salary for a Phlebotomist in the United States is $26,187.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median hourly earning of Phlebotomists employed in hospitals is $11.13/hour, while those employed by private clinics or physicians offices earned about $10.50/hour.

Phlebotomist Job Outlook

Employment of clinical laboratory workers is supposed to grow faster than average between now and 2014 at a rate of eighteen to twenty-six percent.

Technological advances will encourage additional testing which will require more employment of technicians like Phlebotomists to perform simple procedures.

According to the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, phlebotomist shifts are the hardest to fill, with a twenty-five percent employment vacancy.
