Physician Assistants perform a variety of tasks under a physician as part of a healthcare team to provide patient care. Physician Assistants take medical history, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and x-rays, make diagnoses, and in most states are allowed to prescribe medications. Physician Assistants work in a variety of healthcare settings including hospitals, clinics, home health care, and other healthcare facilities. Many Physician Assistants also specialize in areas such as surgery, orthopaedics, and pediatrics and other pre and post-operative assistance.

Physician Assistants are subject to many fees including liability insurance, registration fees with the Drug Enforcement Administration, and state licensing fees. In many cases, the employer will cover these fees.
