Psychologists perform a wide variety of tasks and work in a number of
different clinical and research settings. Generally, psychologists
provide mental health care or investigate and analyze human behavior.
They use a variety of diagnostic tests and tools to treat patients
including interviews, psychological tests, and other methods that may
require a physician. Treatment methods may include psychotherapy,
medication, and rehabilitation. Psychologists may work closely with
other healthcare professionals to provide treatment and are expected to
be very familiar with the concepts and practice of their respected
field.

Overall, Psychologist salaries are based on years of experience,
location, the type of facility and shifts.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the median annual
average salary of clinical, counseling, and school psychologists was
$54,590. However, a variance in salary was reported according to type of
employment as follows:
- Healthcare Practitioner Offices: $64,460
- Elementary/Secondary Schools: $58,360
- Outpatient Care: $46,850
- Individual and Family Services: $42,640
Psychologists who specialize in Industrial/Organizational Psychology
(I/O) had a higher median annual average salary of $71,400.
Psychologist Job Outlook
There is a prosperous job outlook for psychologists in all positions
due to an increased demand for psychologists in schools, hospitals,
substance abuse clinics, consulting firms, and other mental health
centers.
According to the US Department of Labor, the employment of
psychologists between now and 2014 is expected to grow faster than
average at a rate of 18 to 26 percent.
School psychologists with a specialist degree are expected to have
the best advantage of employment opportunities. The increased
understanding of how mental and behavioral problems affect learning is
creating a high demand for psychologists in the school system.
