Radiology Technician Job Description

Radiology Technicians take X-rays and prepare patients by explaining procedures, and position patients in order to be properly x-rayed, or for other imaging techniques. Radiology Technicians also use lead shields and limit the size of the x-ray beam to protect patients from radiation. It is very important that Radiology Technicians follow physicians instructions and regulations of the use of radiation for the safety of the patient, themselves, and their coworkers. Experienced Radiology Technicians may perform more advanced procedures such as fluoroscopy, CT scans and MRI. Advanced technicians may have alternate titles such as CT Technologist or MRI Technologist.

According to Salary.com, the current median expected salary for a Radiology Technician in the United States is $43,645. However, the median expected salary for a specialized Radiology Technician is $56,215.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed a difference in salary of Radiology Technicians by type of facility as follows:

  • Medical and diagnostic laboratories: $46,620
  • General medical and surgical hospitals: $ 43,960
  • Offices of physicians: $ 40,290

Radiology Technician Job Outlook

According to the US Department of Labor the job outlook for Radiology Technicians is very good, with employment opportunities expected to grow faster than average through 2014.

The growing demand for Radiology Technicians is attributed to the growing and aging population that will require more diagnostic imaging.

Radiology Technicians are expected to find the most employment opportunities in hospitals, however, many new jobs will be found in offices of physicians and diagnostic imaging centers.

Radiology Technicians who are specialized in CT or MRI will receive better employment opportunities as physicians control costs by hiring multi-skilled employees.
