Surgical Technologist Job Description
Surgical Technologists perform a variety of tasks under supervision
of a surgeon as part of a surgical team to provide assistance before,
during, and after surgical procedures. Before surgery, Surgical
Technologists set up surgical instruments and equipment, assemble
sterile and non-sterile equipment, and check equipment for
functionality. Surgical Technologists prepare patients for surgery by
washing and disinfecting site of incision. During surgery, Surgical
Technologists pass surgical instruments and sterile supplies to
surgeons. Surgical Technologists also operate light, suction machines,
and other diagnostic equipment. After surgery, Surgical Technologists
clean and stock the operating room for further surgical procedures.

Overall, Surgical Technologist salaries are based on years of
experience, location, certification status, and type of facility.
According to Salary.com, the current median expected salary for a
Surgical Technologist in the United States is $38,051. However, the
American Medical Association reported certified Surgical Technologists
can earn $10,000 more annually than non-certified counterparts.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a difference in salary for
surgical technologists according to type of facility as follows:
- Offices of Dentists: $37,510
- Offices of Physicians: $36,570
- Hospitals: $33,130
Surgical Technologist Job Outlook
Due to the expansion of the healthcare industry, the job outlook for
all surgical technologists is very good. According to the US Department
of Labor, the number of positions for surgical technologists is supposed
to grow much faster than average between now and 2014.
As the population grows and ages, the number of surgical procedures
performed is expected to increase, creating a higher demand for cost
effective, quality surgical assistance.
Technological advances in surgical equipment will allow more surgeries
to be performed, and will allow surgical technologists to assist in more
surgical procedures than before.
Job opportunities will be better in offices physicians and dentists and
outpatient care, although hospitals will continue to be the primary
employer of surgical technologists.
