Acupuncture Schools and Degree Programs
A licensed acupuncturist must obtain a masters degree in Acupuncture
or Oriental Medicine at an accredited college of acupuncture or oriental
medicine. Acupuncture training involves several thousand hours of
training in acupuncture or oriental medicine, with the goal of pain
relief and restoration and maintenance of optimum well being.
Graduates from an accredited acupuncture school are eligible for
acupuncture certification and license after obtaining a 3 to 4 year
master’s degree or diploma. Graduates must also successfully pass an
examination administered by the National Commission for the
Certification of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). The NCCAOM
test is the standard used for licensure in most states. The various
titles given to acupuncturists following education and licensing
include: Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac.), Diplomate in Acupuncture (Dipl.Ac.),
and Diplomate in Chinese Herbology (Dipl.C.H.). In some states
acupuncture may be practiced by other healthcare providers such as
physicians, dentists, and chiropractors without a license.
Acupuncturist Prerequisites
A licensed acupuncturist must complete training at one of the 40+
accredited acupuncture schools around the US. Masters programs generally
require that potential students have an undergraduate degree in anatomy
or physiology. Programs also require that students take certified CPR
courses and maintain CPR certification during education. Students are
personally screened and given propriety for full time. Some acupuncture
schools offer special seminars that are open to the general public
without prerequisites.
