Become An Anesthesiologist
An anesthesiologist is a medical doctor who is trained to administer
anesthesia. Anesthesia is the process of blocking the perception of pain
so that patients may undergo surgery. An anesthesiologist completes
formal doctoral training, as well as four years of post graduate
training in an anesthesiology residency. During residency,
anesthesiologists are trained to fulfill their role in the operating
room. Anesthesiologists are responsible for treating and regulating
changes in vital signs to ensure comfort and safety during surgery.
Anesthesiology Training Requirements To Obtain An Anesthesiologist
Degree
Anesthesiologist training consists of a three to four year residency
at a hospital to learn the necessary skills to be a professional
anesthesiologist. Residency training encompasses all medicine related to
operations, including pre-operation medical evaluation, intra-operative
life support and pain control, and post operative recovery. ICU medicine
and acute and chronic pain management are also covered. During residency
training, anesthesiologists may further specialize in cardiac or
obstetric anesthesia, pain management, or ICU medicine.
Anesthesiologists are licensed as physicians after completion of
medical school, internship, and residency. Certification is required for
anesthetists, who are assistants to anesthesiologists because they do
not have doctoral level education.

Anesthesiology Schools and Degree Programs
Because of the necessary knowledge to perform anesthesiology duties
and because of the great demand, schools offering degree programs have
grown to be quite competitive for admission.
Some of the objectives of an Anesthesiology degree program are to
prepare graduates to assist the anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists
in the surgical suites and prepare equipment, supplies, and patients,
with supervision. The degree program also prepares students for
troubleshooting anesthesia equipment and maintaining a clean work
environment.
Anesthesiology Prerequisites
To become an anesthesiologist, students must first undergo formal
undergraduate and post-graduate medical training. Medical schools
require entrants to have at least a bachelor’s degree in a pre-medical
area of study. Anesthesiologists may attend an allopathic or osteopathic
medical school to attain a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Osteopathic
Doctor (D.O.) degree. Once a degree is attained, the M.D. or D.O. must
complete a one year internship. Length of internship is determined by
state boards and may vary from state to state. Once these prerequisites
are fulfilled, the student is ready to begin an anesthesiology
residency.
Anesthesiologist Continuing Education
All physicians are required to take some form of continuing education
to maintain licensure, although regulations vary from state to state
about how often. Anesthesiologists participate in many continued medical
education courses and legislative activities through their professional
organization, American Society of Anesthesiologists.
