Become A Dentist

A dentist is a licensed professional that diagnoses, prevents, and treats problems of the teeth or mouth tissue. Dentists may perform cosmetic dental procedures to improve appearance of the teeth or surgical procedures such as implants, tissue grafts, or extractions. Dentists generally work in private practice alone, or with partners.

Training Requirements To Obtain A Dentist Degree and License

Training programs for dentists are regulated by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and the ADA. Dental students seek to earn either a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) or a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree, both degrees are equivalent for practicing dentistry. Dentist training requires four year of post graduate study in preparation for dental licensing. The first two years of training focus on classroom time and laboratory work in anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, and physiology. Beginning training also includes clinical sciences including laboratory techniques and radiology. The final years of dentist training focuses on treatment of patients in dental clinics under the supervision of licensed dentists.

All dentists are required to obtain a license for the state in which they practice. Eligible graduates from an accredited dental school must pass the National Board Dental Examination, as well as other state licensing requirements. State boards may require additional examination administered by state or regional testing agencies. A dentist’s license is not transferable to another state, by may fulfill eligibility requirements to obtain licensure.
