An endocrinologist is a doctor who treats disorders of the endocrine
systems, which consists of hormone secreting organs including the
pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands, as well the pancreas, testes and
ovaries. Diseases caused by disorders of the endocrine system are
referred to as a hormonal imbalance. Endocrinologists treat these
diseases including diabetes and hyperthyroidism, as well as hundreds of
other endocrine system diseases. Endocrinologists are specialists in the
areas of internal medicine, pediatrics, or gynecology (reproductive).
Endocrinology Training Requirements To Obtain A Endocrinologist
Degree
In order to become an Endocrinologist, one must first receive
training and licensure as a medical doctor before seeking advanced
training in endocrinology. Endocrinology training programs can take a
minimum of ten years to complete. Following four years of medical
schools, doctors pursue three years residency at a hospital, and three
years of additional fellowship. During hospital residency, training
focuses on diagnosing and treating hormone conditions in the major areas
of endocrinology including diabetes, thyroid, bone, reproduction and
infertility, the pituitary gland, growth, hypertension,
overweight/obesity, and lipid disorders. Endocrinologists train for
fellowships by continuing beneficial work and development in the field
of endocrinology for a minimum of three years, and receive acclaim from
their colleagues.

Endocrinology Certification Programs
Endocrinologists may be subject to state certification exams that
examine knowledge of endocrine disorders and treatments.
Endocrinologists may further their professional development through
memberships in acclaimed endocrinology societies including the American
Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and The Endocrine
Society.
Endocrinology Prerequisites
Prerequisites to enter medical school include 2 to 4 years of
undergraduate education in a field of science, as well as successful
completion of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). Once admitted,
students must complete four years of medical school before they are able
to enter a hospital residency program to specialize in endocrinology.
Various schools and colleges offer flexible course schedules that range
from day, night and weekend classes and training sessions.

All licensed physicians, including endocrinologists are required to
renew their license periodically by fulfilling continued education
requirements.
