Become A Gastroenterologist
A Gastroenterologist is a physician who deals with problems
associated with the digestive tract. A Gastroenterologist is board
certified to diagnose a number of digestive disorders including Chrohn’s
disease, acid reflux, and irritable bowel syndrome. They may perform
tests and treatments, and in some cases perform surgery.
Gastroenterologists typically work in hospitals or private practice.
They work closely with primary care physicians and surgeons to help and
refer patients.
Gastroenterology Training Requirements
Upon completion of medical school, aspiring Gastroenterologists must
complete a two to four year hospital residency specializing in internal
medicine. Once residency is complete, students take board certification
to become a licensed and certified physician. They are then eligible to
begin a Gastroenterologist fellowship which trains doctors in the
evaluation and management of digestive diseases. They learn various
diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopy. Digestive disorders are
broken down into two categories, anatomical and functional. Disorders of
the esophagus are considered disorders of motor function. Liver diseases
also fall under the scope of Gastroenterology. Therefore, certified
Gastroenterologists are trained to diagnose and treat a variety of
digestive diseases.

Gastroenterology Certification
A Gastroenterologist must undergo several years of advanced training
before practicing in the field of Gastroenterology or gastrology.
Training includes four years of medical school training, plus a three to
four year internship or residency followed by specialization in
Gastroenterology. Upon completion of all training and prerequisites,
Gastroenterologists are eligible for board certification by the American
Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Gastroenterologists are also board
certified by the American Medical Association as licensed physicians.
Certification exams test physicians on their knowledge of conditions,
treatments, and diagnostic testing practices.
Gastroenterologist Prerequisites
Before becoming a Gastroenterologist, successful completion of
medical school is required. Medical Schools require undergraduate
