Become A Geriatrician
Geriatrics is the field of medicine that focuses on the prevention
and treatment of conditions that occur in later life, and other diseases
and disabilities associated with aging. Physicians who practice
geriatrics are Geriatricians, and are board certified as physicians and
additionally specialized in Geriatrics. Physicians must take additional
training courses in order to obtain proper certification. Nurses and
nurses assistants may also choose to specialize in geriatrics.
Geriatric Certification Requirements
Physicians must be board certified in family practice or internal
medicine prior to attaining certification in Geriatrics. After
completion of an accredited geriatrician training program, physicians
receive a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ). Nurses and other
healthcare professionals are eligible to take courses to become
certified in geriatric care. Training and certification programs focus
on a wide array of procedures, and prepare physicians to treat aging and
elderly population. Physicians must also have at least two to four years
working in Geriatric care to receive certification. Many certified
geriatricians work in hospitals, and other work in community geriatric
centers.

Geriatric Training and Education
Geriatrics training and education is developed and monitored by the
American Geriatrics Society. After completing required residency in
either internal medicine or family practice, licensed physicians are
eligible to begin Geriatrician training. The training takes two to four
years. The first section focuses on course work specific to geriatric
medicine and psychology such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, persistent
pain, anemia, and many others. The final portion of geriatrics training
focuses on hands-on geriatric patient care. Search HealthCare-TrainingCenter.com
for available courses in your area.
Geriatric Prerequisites
In order to become certified as a Geriatrician, it is required to
attend an accredited medical school and complete mandatory internship or
residency. Medical schools require undergraduate training in a science
related field, as well as successful completion of the Medical College
Admissions Test (MCAT). Admissions are extremely competitive so it is
important to properly prepare with a solid educational background.
Various schools and colleges offer flexible course schedules that range
from day, night and weekend classes and training sessions to set you up
for medical school admission. HealthCare-TrainingCenter.com offers free,
no obligation assistance as you are searching for courses to meet your
Geriatrics prerequisites. Beginning your search is as simple as using
the search feature above.
Geriatric Continuing Education
All physicians are required to take continued education courses to
maintain licensure. The American Geriatrics Society also offers many
continued education courses. Continued education courses are encouraged
for a better understanding of the aging process and the challenges it
presents for physicians.
