Become A Gynecologist
A gynecologist is a physician who specializes in the treatment of the
female reproductive system. Gynecologists are typically duly specialized
in obstetrics, which is the care of women during pregnancy.
Gynecologists rely on experience and judgment to perform a variety of
tasks and accomplish goals. Gynecologists work in a variety of
healthcare settings including hospitals, physician’s offices, community
health clinics, and public health departments.
Gynecologist Training and Certification
A gynecology or obstetrics (OB/GYN) training program involves two to
four years of advanced medical training in the standard concepts and
practices associated with OB/GYN. Training also focuses on direct
patient care. Gynecologists must attend an accredited medical school
prior to beginning training as an OB/GYN professional.
Once physicians complete their gynecology residency they are eligible
for certification by the ACOG. Residents must pass a rigorous set of
exams administered by the ACOG in order to become board certified.
Examination content consists of questions about obstetrics, gynecology,
and preventative and primary care, as well as questions about genetics,
immunology, and pharmacology.
