Become A Hematologist
A hematologist is a doctor who treats disorders of the blood, which
includes blood cells, hemoglobin, blood producing organs, bone marrow,
as well as the vascular system. Blood disorders affect a great number of

Upon completion of medical school and a required two to four year
residency in internal medicine, physicians become certified and may
begin advanced training in hematology. Hematologist training courses
consist of a hospital residency with course work and hands on training
in treatment of blood disorders including hemophilia, hematology
malignancies (cancer), and blood transfusion. Course work includes
topics such as, hematologic neoplasm, hemostasis and thrombosis, red and
white blood cell disorders, and stem cell transplantation. Hematologists
may choose to specialize in the areas of internal medicine and
pediatrics.

Hematology Certification
Hematologists are required to be board certified by the American
Board of Internal Medicine. Upon completion of a hematologist residency,
physicians are eligible to take the certification examination
administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Hematology Prerequisites
All physicians are required to attend an accredited medical school
and residency before training to become a hematologist. Medical schools
require undergraduate training in a science related field, as well as
successful completion of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).
