Become A Hematologist

A hematologist is a doctor who treats disorders of the blood, which includes blood cells, hemoglobin, blood producing organs, bone marrow, as well as the vascular system. Blood disorders affect a great number of other conditions, so it is important a hematologist have a great understanding of many types of disorders. Hematologists treat diseases including anemia, leukemia, hemophilia, sickle-cell disease, and a vast number of other conditions.




Hematology Training Requirements

In order to become a Hematologist, one must first receive training and licensure as a physician before seeking advanced training in hematology. Training for Hematologists takes at least ten years overall.

Upon completion of medical school and a required two to four year residency in internal medicine, physicians become certified and may begin advanced training in hematology. Hematologist training courses consist of a hospital residency with course work and hands on training in treatment of blood disorders including hemophilia, hematology malignancies (cancer), and blood transfusion. Course work includes topics such as, hematologic neoplasm, hemostasis and thrombosis, red and white blood cell disorders, and stem cell transplantation. Hematologists may choose to specialize in the areas of internal medicine and pediatrics.

Hematology Certification

Hematologists are required to be board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Upon completion of a hematologist residency, physicians are eligible to take the certification examination administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

All physicians are required to attend an accredited medical school and residency before training to become a hematologist.
