Become A Home Health Care Professional
Home health is health care provided in the home by healthcare
professionals. It is also referred to as domiciliary care. Home health
care is different from home care, which refers to non-health care
provided by family or non-licensed medical personnel, while home health
care denotes care provided by licensed healthcare professionals. Most
home care is estimated to be provided by family and friends, while
formal care is provided by nurses, therapists, home health aides, and in
some cases, physicians.
Home health providers aid in Activities of Daily Living (ADL), which
refers to six activities, bathing, dressing, eating, walking, using the
toilet, and transferring, that determine the patients’ ability for
self-care. Home health care workers also provide assistance with
instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), which refers to six
daily tasks that allow patients to live independently, including
housework, cooking, taking medications, shopping, using the telephone,
and managing money.
Home Health Care Certification
Home care aides and assistants may receive national certification
through the National Association of Home Care (NAHC). Certified nurses
assistants (CNA) may also receive national certification and have
background experience in health care prior to employment with a home
healthcare agency.
