Internal Medicine

Internist Medicine Training Schools, Continuing Education, and Jobs

Become An Internist

Internist is the name given to a doctor of Internal Medicine. Their medical specialty focuses on adult medicine and the prevention and treatment of diseases. Internists may act as primary care physicians but are not the same as family practitioners. Most internists specialize in other areas such as cardiology, endocrinology, hematology, infectious diseases, and several more.

Internal Medicine Training

Upon completion of medical school, graduates begin hospital residency that focus on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of many adult disorders. Internists are trained in problems of the internal organs including the kidneys, liver, stomach, and digestive tract. If an internist chooses to further specialize, training may include a focus on a specific area of medicine such as critical care, cardiology, geriatrics, allergy, nuclear medicine, and more.
