Become A Nephrologist
A Nephrologist is a doctor of internal medicine who is specialized in
the diseases and disorders of the kidneys. A Nephrologist diagnoses and
manages kidney disease, kidney transplants, diabetes, dialysis, high
blood pressure, and some cancers. A wide degree of creativity and
latitude is required and a Nephrologist must rely on judgment and
experience to accomplish plans and goals. Nephrologists typically work
in hospitals, offices, or clinics.
Nephrology Training
Upon completion of medical school and residency, the physician must
become board certified in order to begin Nephrology training. Training
programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate
Medical Education (ACGME) and generally take three years to complete.
Training focuses on physiology of the kidneys and renal system,
metabolism, tubular disorders, as well as successful management and
treatment of acute and chronic conditions.

Nephrology Degree and Certification Programs
Training for a Nephrologist involves completion of medical school
education, as well as hospital residency in internal medicine, and a
following two to four year training program specifically in Nephrology.
Following successful completion of a Nephrology residency, physicians
are eligible for board certification. Certification is given to those
who pass the national examination administered by the American Board of
Internal Medicine (ABIM).
Nephrology Prerequisites
In order become a Nephrologist, individuals must first attend an
accredited medical school and complete a require two to three year
residency in Internal Medicine. Medical school prerequisites include an
undergraduate education in a science related field and successful
completion of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Various medical
schools and colleges offer flexible course schedules that range from
day, night and weekend classes and training sessions.
Nephrologist Continuing Education
All physicians are required to take continued education courses to
maintain licensure. The American Board of Internal Medicine also has a
‘Maintenance of Certification’ program for Nephrologists that must be
completed every ten years.
