Become A Neurologist
Neurology is a field that deals with disorders of the nervous
systems, which includes the brain, spinal chord, nerves, and in some
cases, the musculoskeletal system. Neurologists treat a number of
diseases and disorders including headaches, epilepsy, and other
disorders with neurological manifestations, such as dementia and genetic
disorders. Physicians in the field of neurology may be neurologists,
neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, pediatric neurologists, or clinical
neurophysiologists. Advanced medical training is required in order to
practice in the field of neurology.
Neurology Training, Certification and License Requirements
Neurologists must train as a physician before beginning advanced
training as a neurologist. Upon completion of medical school, physicians
may begin hospital residency specializing in neurology. Training takes
typically up to twelve years to complete, with additional methods to
further sub-specialize in surgery, pediatrics, or physiology. There is a
lot of overlap of neurology with other medical fields such as internal
medicine, psychiatry, or radiology, thus training may include additional
fields.
All physicians are required to become board certified in their
primary field of specialty. Board certification is given by the American
Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) to physicians who have
satisfied all educational requirements and successfully completed
examinations. The board also makes the decision if a candidate has
received adequate training and education to practice medicine. For those
who specialize in other field such as pediatrics or radiology may be
subject to subsequent examination and licensure.

Neurology Training and Degree Programs
Specialists in neurology attend four years of medical school before
continuing for six to eight years of advanced training in neurology.
Advanced training consists of a hospital residency which trains the
physician in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of numerous
neurological diseases and disorders including epilepsies, headaches and
migraines, movement disorders, spinal chord disorders, and genetic
disorders with neurological manifestations (which is usually the case).
Neurologists may gain extra training in sub-fields such as sleep
disorders, multiple sclerosis, or neurodegenitive disorders such as
Alzheimer’s. Neurosurgeons must also take additional training to become
licensed as a surgeon, while there are some joint residency programs for
other specialties such as Psychiatry/Neurology or Neurology/Diagnostic
Radiology. Those who specialize in psychiatry are trained in the neuro-chemical
mechanisms involved in psychiatric disorders such as bipolar disorder or
schizophrenia. Those who specialize in radiology are trained in the
extensive use of imaging techniques such as MRI or CT scans to diagnose
neurological disorders. During training, specialists must take exams to
test knowledge and judgment of treatment and procedures as well as the
ability to provide superior care. Upon completion of residency,
neurologists are also eligible to take a fellowship for further training
for a subspecialty in a neurological field such as clinical
neurophysiology, pain management, or neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Neurology Prerequisites
In order to begin training in neurology, students must have attended
a four year medical school and completed the residency and internship
requirement of their medical school. Medical schools generally require a
bachelor’s or master’s degree in a science related field and also take
into consideration other undergraduate experiences, credentials and
qualifications. Once completed, physicians may continue training with an
additional hospital residency in neurology. HealthCare-TrainingCenter.com
