Nursing Training Schools, Continuing
Education, and Jobs
Nursing Training Requirements
Training requirements vary depending on a number of factors.
Depending on the level of degree, training may require additional hours
of educational training and clinical training. For ASN or BSN programs,
training courses involve the teaching of simple and complex medical
procedures as well as coursework in medical law and ethics. ASN and BSN
training is designed to prepare students for the national certification
exam following graduation.
For masters or doctoral nursing degrees, training programs require
more advanced educational and clinical training, where already certified
and licensed nurses focus on a medical specialization. Some examples are
nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioner, or a specialization in pediatrics
or mental health. Use our search box to find what advanced nursing
degrees are available from nursing schools in your area.
Nursing Certification
State boards determine certification and licensing requirements for
nursing students. The type of licensure or certification sought after
differs also depending on the nursing career that is chosen. For
example, nursing students perusing careers as RN or LPN must pass the
NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-LN, respectively, to receive licensure for the state.
For advanced nursing degrees, certification varies according to state
board guidelines and type of nursing degree. A nurse practitioner must
take a state board examination for certification and licensure, while a
CRNA must take a national examination to become certified by the
national Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists (CCNA). All
nurses are required to renew their license periodically, pursuant to
state board and national guidelines.

Nursing Schools and Degree Programs
A nursing school is an educational institution or part of an
educational institution that offers formal education and training in the
field of science of nursing. At a nursing school, students undergo
training to become a nurse. Nursing schools typically offer several
degree programs. Nursing school training and nursing school requirements
vary greatly across the world. In the United States, nursing school
graduates are subject to licensure and certification as determined by
state and national boards.
Nursing schools provide educational training as well as clinical
training to prepare nurses for their degree. Depending on the level of
degree, educational training can vary from general nursing theory and
practice, to specialization at the masters or doctoral level.
When choosing a nursing school it is important to look at examination
pass rates as an indicator of how well the nursing school prepares
students for examination. It is also important to look at accreditation
to ensure that the nursing school meets the national standards of
education. Tuition is also an important consideration for a nursing
school, as degree programs can take anywhere from 2 to 4 years.
Important things to look in the training programs of nursing schools
are school size and class size. These factors can have an impact on
course work and clinical rotation. Smaller schools and smaller class
sizes mean more personal attention and more effective teaching. Also
look at clinical rotation time to see if the nursing school provides
enough varied and hands-on experience.
Nursing Prerequisites
Prerequisites for programs and nursing schools can depend on the
program that is sought. For an Associate or Bachelor of Nursing Degree,
prerequisites usually consist of a high school diploma with a college
prep background. Nursing schools usually have a minimum GPA requirement
of 2.0 or higher and also require references and letters of
recommendation. For a masters or doctoral level program, prerequisites
require an ASN or BSN as well as several years of clinical experience.
Nursing schools may also require licensure and certification in the
state. We have nursing school requirement resources available for you.
Nursing Continuing Education
Depending on state regulations, all nurses may be required to take
continued education (CE) courses. Most nursing schools
offer continuing education courses.
