Become An Oncologist
An oncologist is a doctor who diagnoses and treats different types of
cancer. An oncologist may be specialized in medical oncology, surgical
oncology, and radiation oncology. The three groups divide the various
principles for treating various types of cancer. Oncologists treat and
manage patient care after a diagnosis has been made.
Oncology Training Requirements
Upon completion of medical school and a required two to four year
residency in internal medicine, physicians become certified and may
begin advanced training in one of three branches of oncology. Medical
Oncology focuses on the use of medications to treat cancer, such as
chemotherapy. Surgical oncology focuses on surgical procedures, namely
tumor removal. Radiation oncology focuses on the use of radiation
therapy as a treatment of cancer. Oncologists are trained in the various
diagnostic measures to test for cancer and malignancies, as well as
alternative therapies for cancer treatment.

Oncology Certification Programs
Oncologists are required to be board certified by the American Board
of Internal Medicine. Upon completion of an oncology residency,
physicians are eligible to take the certification examination
administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Oncology Prerequisites
All physicians are required to attend an accredited medical school
and residency before training to become an oncologist. Medical schools
require undergraduate training in a science related field, as well as
successful completion of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).
