Become An Ophthalmologist
An ophthalmologist is a physician who diagnoses and treats diseases
of the eye and its components. Ophthalmologists treat eye injuries and
irregularities, and also prescribe corrective vision measures including
glasses, contacts, or surgery. An ophthalmologist may report to a
physician, but is expected to draw on judgment and experience to plan
and meet goals. Ophthalmologists are generally grouped with surgeons
since they are the doctors who perform eye surgery.
Ophthalmology Training Requirements
After medical school graduation, ophthalmologists are required to
take four years of additional training. The first year should be a
hospital residency in internal medicine, surgery, or pediatrics.
Following the first year, residency focuses on ophthalmology. Residency
training programs must be approved by the Accreditation Council for
Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Residents are trained to perform eye
exams, prescribe glasses and surgery, and diagnose and treat many
diseases of the eye including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration,
retina diseases, and pediatric eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are
trained in vision surgery and management of eye disorders caused by
other illnesses.

Ophthalmology Schools and Certification Programs
An Ophthalmologist training program consists of a four year program
following graduation from medical school. The program includes hospital
internship as well as specific training in ophthalmology. Many
ophthalmologists choose to further specialize in certain diseases or
certain parts of the eye. Ophthalmologists may be found practicing in
hospitals, physician’s offices, or eye clinics.
Ophthalmologists are required to be board certified by the American
Board of Ophthalmology. Upon completion of an accredited Ophthalmology
residency, physicians are eligible to take the certification examination
administered by the American Board of Ophthalmology, which is a rigorous
two part exam to test the ability to provide expert care.
Ophthalmology Prerequisites
All physicians are required to attend an accredited medical school
and residency before training to become an ophthalmologist. Medical
schools require undergraduate training in a science related field, as
well as successful completion of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).
Various schools and colleges offer flexible course schedules that range
from day, night and weekend classes and training sessions. HealthCare-TrainingCenter.com
offers free, no obligation assistance as you are searching for courses
to meet your Ophthalmologist or Medical School prerequisites. Beginning
your search is as simple as using the search feature above.
Ophthalmology Continuing Education
All physicians are required to take continued education courses to
maintain licensure. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO)
organizes conferences and continued education courses to help
Ophthalmologists maintain certification and meet requirements.
