Become An Orthopaedist
An Orthopaedist is commonly referred to as an Orthopaedic Surgeon.
They are physicians with a specialization in the field of Orthopaedics,
which is the correction or prevention of musculoskeletal diseases or
injuries. Most Orthopaedists sub-specialize on a particular part of the
skeletal system such as the hand, foot, spine, or sports medicine.
Orthopaedist Training and Certification Requirements
Training to become an Orthopaedic surgeon requires four years of
medical school, a five year residency in Orthopaedics, and an additional
two to four years in order to sub-specialize. Training to become an
Orthopaedic surgeon can take thirteen years of post secondary education.
Orthopaedists perform a wide variety of tasks and must be familiar with
the standards and practices of Orthopaedics.
Upon completion of an accredited Orthopaedic surgery residency,
physicians are eligible to take the certification examination
administered by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. All
orthopaedic surgeons are required to be certified by to ABOS in order to
practice. There are additional certification boards for those who
sub-specialize, for example, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports
Medicine (AOSSM) certifies orthopaedic surgeons who specialize in sports
medicine.

Orthopaedist Training Schools
Upon completion of medical school and required internship,
Orthopaedic surgeons begin a five year residency in Orthopaedic surgery.
Training focuses on general Orthopaedics, including surgical practices
to mend fractures by using corrective devices, joint replacements,
treatment of scoliosis, and other musculoskeletal surgical methods.
Following a five year residency, most Orthopaedists continue with a two
to four year fellowship to sub-specialize in one of nine Orthopaedic
specialties. They include hand surgery, shoulder/elbow surgery,
foot/ankle surgery, spine surgery, total joint reconstruction, pediatric
orthopaedics, musculoskeletal oncology, surgical sports medicine, and
orthopaedic surgery.
Orthopaedist Prerequisites
All physicians are required to attend an accredited medical school
and complete required internships before training to become an
