Become A Otolaryngologist (ORL; ENT)
Otolaryngologist is the name given to a physician who diagnoses and
treats disorders of the ear, nose, and throat, as well as the head and
neck. Practitioners are also referred to as otorhinolaryngologists (ORL),
or another common term is ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) Doctor.
Otolaryngologist Training Requirements
Upon completion of medical school, Otolaryngologists must begin a
five year Otolaryngology residency approved by the Accreditation Council
for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Training focuses on the
diagnoses and treatment of ear, nose, throat, head, and neck disorders.
Otolaryngologists may also choose to obtain a fellowship in a
sub-specialty following five year residency. Specialties include head
and neck cancer surgery, facial plastic/reconstructive surgery, surgery
of the inner and middle ear, allergy, sinus surgery, sleep apnea
surgery, and other surgeries related to the head.

Otolaryngologist Schools and Certification Programs
Otolaryngologists must complete medical school as well as a five year
residency program in general surgery and head and neck surgery.
Otolaryngologists may choose to continue their education in a
sub-specialties or otolaryngology. Practicing Otolaryngologists treat a
number of disorders and must rely on experience and judgment to perform
specific duties and accomplish goals.
All Otolaryngologists are required to be certified by the American
Board of Otolaryngology (ABOto) in order to practice. Upon completion of
an accredited Otolaryngologist residency, physicians are eligible to
take the certification examination administered by the ABOto. The
examination is a rigorous two part written and oral examination covering
all areas of Otolaryngology.

All physicians are required to attend an accredited medical school
and complete require internships before training to become an
Otolaryngologist. Medical school requires undergraduate training in a
science related field, as well as successful completion of the Medical
College Admissions Test (MCAT). Medical schools also consider volunteer
