Become A Phlebotomist
A phlebotomist is a laboratory technician who draws blood from
patients, either for laboratory testing or blood donation. Phlebotomists
must adhere to strict health policies and procedures when treating
patients. Phlebotomists use several different methods to draw blood from
all types of patients.
Phlebotomy Training and Certification Requirements
Phlebotomist training programs are typically held at hospitals,
vocational schools or technical colleges. The American Red Cross and The
American Heart Association also offer day training clinics. Formal
training can take from four months to one year to complete. Course of
study includes topics such as anatomy, interacting with patients, legal
aspects of blood collection, Universal and Standard Safety Precautions,
and blood collection techniques.
Though not required for employment, certification is available for
phlebotomists through a number of organizations. Phlebotomists may take
certification examinations administered by the American Society of
Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), the American Medical Technologists (AMT),
or the American Association of Medical Personnel (AAMP).
