A Physician or Surgeon
Anesthesiology
Residency training encompasses all medicine related to operations,
including pre-operation medical evaluation, intra-operative life support
and pain control, and post operative recovery.
Bariatrics
During training, physicians may focus primarily on surgical procedures
or on allied health treatment and prevention methods.
Cardiology
During training, specialists must take exams to test knowledge and
judgment of treatment and procedures as well as the ability to provide
superior care.
Dermatology
Training in a dermatology residency includes intense medical and
surgical training, schooling in rheumatology, immunology, neurology, and
infectious diseases. Dermatologists are trained in many fields because
more serious conditions manifest symptoms within the skin.
Endocrinology
During hospital residency, training focuses on diagnosing and treating
hormone conditions in the major areas of endocrinology including
diabetes, thyroid, bone, reproduction and infertility, the pituitary
gland, growth, hypertension, overweight/obesity, and lipid disorders.
Family Practitioner
In training, a Family Practitioner learns to treat any problem, and
places emphasis on common problems. Coursework includes medicine,
dentistry, counseling, and administration to prepare Family
Practitioners with knowledge in all areas of medical treatment.
Gastroenterology
Training includes four years of medical school training, plus a three to
four year internship or residency followed by specialization in
Gastroenterology.
General Surgery
The training of general surgery focuses on the abdominal organs
including the stomach, colon, liver, even thyroid gland.
Geriatrics
Training and certification programs focus on a wide array of procedures,
and prepare physicians to treat aging and elderly population.
Gynecology
OB/GYN training involves the education of different diseases,
investigations, and treatments pertinent to women’s health. Students
learn how to perform ultrasounds, blood tests, and other invasive
investigative measures. Students are also educated on the diseases that
affect women including cervical cancer, problems with menstruation,
incontinence, and infertility.
Hematology
Hematologist training courses consist of a hospital residency with
course work and hands on training in treatment of blood disorders
including hemophilia, hematology malignancies (cancer), and blood
transfusion. Course work includes topics such as, hematologic neoplasm,
hemostasis and thrombosis, red and white blood cell disorders, and stem
cell transplantation.
Internal Medicine
If an internist chooses to further specialize, training may include a
focus on a specific area of medicine such as critical care, cardiology,
geriatrics, allergy, nuclear medicine, and more.
Nephrology
Training focuses on physiology of the kidneys and renal system,
metabolism, tubular disorders, as well as successful management and
treatment of acute and chronic conditions.
Oncology
Upon completion of medical school and a required two to four year
residency in internal medicine, physicians become certified and may
begin advanced training in one of three branches of oncology.
Opthamology
Residents are trained to perform eye exams, prescribe glasses and
surgery, and diagnose and treat many diseases of the eye including
cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, retina diseases, and
pediatric eye disorders.
Orthopaedics
Training focuses on general Orthopaedics, including surgical practices
to mend fractures by using corrective devices, joint replacements,
treatment of scoliosis, and other musculoskeletal surgical methods.
Osteopathy
Osteopathic training involves classroom training, programs providing
patient contact, and in depth rotation through the different specialties
of medicine.
Otolaryngology
Training focuses on the diagnoses and treatment of ear, nose, throat,
head, and neck disorders.
Pathology
Pathology training typically focuses on the two primary branches of
pathology, anatomic pathology and clinical pathology. Anatomic pathology
uses the microscopic appearance of tissue to diagnose disease, while
clinical pathology uses bodily fluids such as blood and urine to
diagnose disease.
Pediatrics
Training focuses on problems and maladies that affect young people. In
training, a Pediatrician learns to treat many common problems as well as
conditions specific to children.
Plastic Surgery
The training of plastic surgery encompasses both functional and cosmetic
surgical procedures. Course work includes basic science related to
plastic surgery including pathology, physiology, biochemistry, and
anatomy.
Proctology
In training, proctologists gain extensive experience in the diagnosis,
treatment, and surgical management of colon, rectal, and anal diseases.
Proctologists are also trained in instrumental inspection using a
proctocscope, as well as the examination and evaluation of laboratory
results.
Pulmonology
Upon completion of medical school and a required residency in internal
medicine, physicians become certified and may begin advanced training in
pulmonology. Pulmonologists are trained in the diagnoses and treatment
of lung disease such as emphysema, pneumonia, and asthma, using a
variety of diagnostic tools.
Rheumatology
Clinical training for Rheumatologists focuses on all the aspects of
clinical Rheumatology including pediatric rheumatology, consultation,
physical medicine, rehabilitation, neurology, and orthopaedics.
Urology
Urologists gain skills in intensive and critical care, as well as
knowledge of the disorders of urology such as incontinence, urinary
tract infections, and sexual dysfunction.
