Become A Plastic Surgeon
A Plastic Surgeon is a surgeon who performs operations on individuals
for functional or aesthetic treatments. Plastic surgeons may focus on
reconstructive surgery to reduce scarring and disfigurement as a result
of accidents or birth defects. Plastic surgeons may also focus on
cosmetic surgery which is typically unrelated to medical conditions but
is bothersome to the patient. The term "plastic", refers to the molding
and shaping of surgery, not the use of actual plastic.
Plastic Surgeon Training Requirements
Following medical school and residency, surgeons take an additional
five years of specialized training in the field of general surgery.
Surgeons must then be approved by the American Board of Plastic Surgery
to begin plastic surgery residency. The training of plastic surgery
encompasses both functional and cosmetic surgical procedures. Course
work includes basic science related to plastic surgery including
pathology, physiology, biochemistry, and anatomy. Training also includes
extensive exposure to care of emergencies, shock, wound healing, blood
replacement, pharmacology, anesthetics, and chemotherapy.
