Become A Pulmonologist
A Pulmonologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and
treatment of diseases and disorders of the lungs and respiratory tract.
Pulmonology is referred to by several names including chest medicine,
respiratory medicine, and pneumology. Pulmonologists are required to
have specialized knowledge in internal medicine, and may also further
sub-specialize in critical care medicine, and pediatric pulmonary
medicine.
Pulmonologist Training
Upon completion of medical school and a required residency in
internal medicine, physicians become certified and may begin advanced
training in pulmonology. Pulmonologists are trained in the diagnoses and
treatment of lung disease such as emphysema, pneumonia, and asthma,
using a variety of diagnostic tools. Pulmonologists who specialize in
critical care are trained in the management and treatment of critically
ill adult patients, while those who specialize in pediatric pulmonary
medicine are trained in the areas that affect children including
allergy, immunology, and pathology.
