A Surgical Technologist assists in the surgical operations under
direct supervision of a registered nurse, surgeon, or other surgical
personnel. They are also referred to as operating room technicians.
Surgical Technologists perform a variety of tasks before, during, and
after surgical procedures to assist the surgical team.
Surgical Technologist Training
Surgical Technologists are recommended to take a two year training
program accredited by the Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health
Education Programs (CAAHEP). Training programs are typically offered at
hospitals, technical colleges, and vocational schools. Training consists
of course work and hands on experience in anatomy, medical terminology,
and sterilization techniques.

Training programs for surgical technologists can take one to two
years to complete, although a two year accredited program increases
employment opportunities.
Upon completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist training
program, graduates are eligible to take the national certification
examination to become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in
Surgery-Certified (T-SC).

In order to enter a Surgical Technologist training program, most
programs only require a high school diploma or equivalent. Various
